It was interesting to read the Soapbox article ("When IT Pulls the Security Card, Pull Your Obscurity Card") in the June 2011 issue, where Anders Gronstedt paints the IT department as the enemy of learning technologies and a bully to boot because they stand in the way of the bright future of learning.

And then to flip just 35 pages further on in the same issue and read a fascinating article about "Training on the Cyber Security Frontlines" where Jay VanDerwerken and Robert Ubell show us in some detail about the gigantic threat that new technologies bring into our companies with sometimes "thousands of attacks each day."

As a training professional who has worked closely with IT departments in both the telecommunications and insurance industries, I have found few IT professionals who are against new technology. Quite often, they are the first to embrace it, test it, and help to implement it.

However, they are required by their position to be 100 percent sure that it will not harm the environment and open up their companies' valuable data to theft or vandalism. It may take some time to certify that new technology is harmless to the corporate environment or to research, purchase, and install the software and hardware to make it benign, but that is always time well spent. …
