The standard workday can be a real pain in the back if you slouch in a chair all day or stand on your feet for 8 hours. LUMO BodyTech's LUMOback helps you sit and stand straight. Users can buy a posture sensor ($149.95) that straps around the lower back; it provides a gentle vibration if their pelvic-tilt angle is less than satisfactory. The device also connects wirelessly to most iOS devices (Apple iPhone 4S, Apple iPhone 5, iPad 3rd and 4th generations, iPad mini, and iPod touch 5th generation) and will display a simple avatar of yourself: happy and green when posture-perfect and sad and orange when not.

The app also provides just about every statistic about your sitting, standing, and moving posture that you're likely to need. You'll see the total amount of time you spend sitting up straight versus slouched, how long you're sitting during the day, and how many total steps you've taken. While the price tag (and the commitment needed to wear a buzzing device all day) may be steep, you're likely to get your money's worth if you have a bad back.

Boxed In

A mobile commerce app called Boxed, created by former Zynga, Inc. executives, can save your library the time it takes to drive to one of the big warehouse stores and buy staples by the metric ton. The free app lets you browse the content of its warehouse and buy the bulk items you need, plus it offers free 1-day or 2-day shipping on orders of $75 or more at locations along the East Coast. More locations are expected to be added.
