This duo follows the success of The Goggle-Eyed Goats, which was set in Timbuktu, by creating this delightful story set in Nigeria. Stephen Davies has lived for ten years among Fulani herders in Burkina Faso, and his closeness to the culture and the country shows throughout this book.

Penda offers to take a bowl of milk to her father, herding in the grasslands, and this is a journey that will take her the whole day. With the bowl balanced on her head, she talks encouragingly to herself as she goes on her journey: 'Steady ... gently does it, girl, don't wiggle, don't wobble, don't try to rush it, girl'. She carries the bowl past camels on the dunes, through a rainy season mask dance, across the River Niger in a fishing boat, ('Don't shiver, don't quiver, don't fall in the river, girl'), across a few more pages, and finally arrives at the grasslands. …
