WHAT DISTINGUISHES A professional from someone who performs a job well?

If this question were asked in a seminar or classroom, hands would go up and the instructor might list the following responses on a whiteboard:

* Education

* Specialized training

* Pride in work

* Interest in new developments within the profession or industry

* Commitment to improving knowledge and skills

* Dedication

* Membership in a professional organization

It was way back in 1914 that a group of bankers founded RMA because they believed that those who extended bank credit should be professionals. They recognized the need to meet in person and discuss issues of common concern. They wanted to learn from one another and to share credit information about borrowers.

Through the years, we have added products and services that help RMA members succeed as professionals. Our courses, conferences, webinars, books, and The RMA Journal have evolved with the times, addressing more complex global risks even while continuing to focus on the basics. An important lesson we've learned over and over during the past 100 years is that the basics of lending do not change.

Today RMA remains focused on professional development in the classroom, online, and at conferences and round tables. We still recognize the need to learn from one another, to meet in person, to share our experiences, and to develop our skills so that we can advance our own careers while benefiting our institution and the industry as whole.
