Our next issue of The Middle East, the first of 2014, will mark the beginning of a very special year for The Middle East magazine.

The first ever issue of TME appeared on the news stands in May 1974 when the Middle East was a very different place to the region we know today.

In Saudi Arabia, King Faisal bin Abdulaziz was on the throne. The Shah of Iran (just five years from his enforced exile and the establishment of the Islamic Republic) was predicting that within a few years Iran would be among the five most prosperous countries in the world, thanks to its massive hydrocarbons wealth and the increasing price of oil.

A year earlier, as a result of the West's overwhelming support for Israel following the October '73 war, several Arab oil exporting nations--joined by Iran--imposed an oil embargo on the countries supporting Israel, pushing the price to unprecedented levels. …
