A 12-year-old Irish girl, Mary, is visited by the ghost of her great-grandmother, Tansy, who appears in order to ease her own daughter now a grandmother herself--towards her death. Joined by her mother, Mary introduces Tansy to her much loved grandmother (her own daughter who had been only an infant when she had died) and the four of them go on a mini road trip to visit the places where three of the generations had grown up.

As a bald account of a narrative, this would do very little to attract a discerning reader of any age but, in the hands of such a consummate story-teller as Roddy Doyle, it does take on a life of its own and offers a gentle testimony to the strength of mother-daughter relationships across the age-range whilst giving a beautifully nuanced account of a young girl dealing with the imminent death of her grandmother. …
