DEAR KATIE Ah yes, we've all been there--the bathroom you hate but think you can't do anything about because it isn't, strictly speaking, yours. Luckily, there are more ways than you'd think to make a bleak bathroom inviting. Even if you can't change major fixtures like sinks or lighting, replacing hardware like towel racks and vanity knobs (find fun ones at Anthropologie and Cost Plus World Market) is easy and adds personality. Look to soft goods like bath mats and towels--maybe a basket of towels--to supply texture and color. We like using art too--obviously you don't want to subject masterpieces to bathroom humidity, but framed vacation photos or posters are inexpensive and unexpected. If you're stuck with one of those bland half-tiled bathroom walls, Mibo tile stickers (available at 2jane.com) will give it a shot of adrenaline.
