A couple of years ago, we sponsored a seminar to educate our customers about the changing lien laws in the state of Utah. In a joint effort between credit and sales, we invited customers and subcontractors who were able to earn continued education hours toward their contractor's license renewal. We arranged for an attorney come in to talk about the Utah State Construction Registry and the rules surrounding the filing of preliminary notices and other requirements in order to preserve mechanic's lien rights. I was involved with planning, scheduling an attorney and setting up the seminars. We held one in our office and one in our driver training room at one of our plants. I was also able to coordinate the education credits through the state Department of Professional Licensing.

The state of Utah is one of the only states that has implemented a state construction registry through a website where you go to file a preliminary notice or "declaration" that you have provided materials on a particular job site. …
