Susan Gartell: What the Milwaukee Ballet Dancer Can't Live Without

It took Arizona native Susan Gartell a while to warm up to the freezing winters of Wisconsin. But after 10 years with the Milwaukee Ballet, Gartell has learned to love all four seasons. "The best thing about this climate is the accomplishment of going anywhere--if it's negative 20 and snowing and you leave your apartment, you're so proud of yourself when you get there," she jokes. But the real accomplishment Gartell could note is earning a college degree: After leaving the University of Arizona early to start a career in ballet, Gartell is now dancing full-time and pursuing a degree in political science. "It's intense," she says. "Instead of getting to relax at home, I worry about school. But it's a nice escape to remember that there are other things out there besides ballet."
