Drive for $30 million in 3 yrs brings doubt, dismay in Buffalo

James McNulty, bishop of Buffalo, N.Y., for one year, surprised pastors and lay leaders when he informed them that the diocese was $30 million in debt. His recovery plan caused even more surprise; He suggested each Catholic wage earner in the diocese donate $11 per week.

Pressure leads to Philippine probe of alleged political prisoner torture

Pressure from international religious groups forced Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos to order a probe into alleged torture of political prisoners. Three members of his cabinet and five generals met with three bishops and five other clergymen to discuss the charges against the 4,000 political prisoners.

Pro-lifers bring high hopes, food to Washington march

During the annual March for Life in Washington, pro-life supporters collected 10 million pounds of food that will be distributed in the sub-Sahara region of Africa by CARE.

Bishops' report supports, cautions charismatics

Following the recommendation of its Committee for Pastoral Research and Practices, the U.S. bishops issued a statement of support and encouragement to the Catholic Charismatic Renewal movement, though they cautioned movement members about biblical fundamentalism and isolationism.

Ex-Jesuits' appeal denied

The Vatican's Congregation for Religious rejected the appeal of Fr. Joseph P. O'Rourke, marking the official end of his membership in the Jesuits. O'Rourke was censured in August after he ignored an order by a Marlboro, Mass., pastor who had refused to baptize the infant son of a woman who had supported the opening of an abortion clinic in Marlboro. …
