Ins and Outs-1

Article excerpt

When one is aware of the intricacies of a particular situation, we say that he or she knows all of its ins and outs. The matching quiz that follows affords you the opportunity to make the same claim. Column A provides a roster of twenty definitions for words, each of which transforms into another upon the attachment of either the prefix IN or OUT to it. Clues for the resulting outcomes are displayed in Column B, so the missing links are the connectors between the column entries. To illustrate, "colorful bloom" and "personification" would be paired, as they suggest CARNATION and INCARNATION. Similarly, a bridge between "social position" and "remote post" would be deemed appropriate, as these correspond to the words STATION and OUTSTATION, respectively.

In the two bonus questions that appear at the end, you are given three prompts--one for a "root word" and the other two for the words that emerge when that root word is prefaced with IN and OUT. Consequently, "faction", "type of job", and "exterior" would yield SIDE, INSIDE, and OUTSIDE.
