Myanmar Baptist Convention Celebrates Its 200th Anniversary

Under the rubric "Your Will Be Done in Myanmar, 1813-2013," some 30,000 Baptists from across Myanmar assembled in Yangon, December 5-8, 2013, to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Myanmar Baptist Convention. All eighteen tribal regions were visibly represented at the conference, with more than 10,000 attendees from the Kachin Baptist Convention alone. International delegates included Tomokiyo Amuro (chairperson, Okinawa Baptist Convention Board of Directors), Neville G. Callam (general secretary of the Baptist World Alliance), Henriette Hutabarat Lebang (general secretary of the Christian Council of Asia), Roy Medley (general secretary of the American Baptist Churches), and P. Bonny Resu (general secretary of the Asia Pacific Baptist Federation).

As OMSC executive director emeritus, I was invited to bring greetings from OMSC during a plenary session and to present General Secretary Yam Kho Pau with a framed certificate of congratulations signed by J. Nelson Jennings, OMSC executive director. OMSC alumni were evident since many of them hold prominent positions of denominational leadership, including Zaw Win (president of the Myanmar Baptist Convention), Mayn Than Tan (vice president), and Saw Samson Latt (associate general secretary). …
