Eroica Trio's cellist plays Chopin transcriptions

Robert Koenig is the pianist on this new Chopin recording, which is rarely about the piano. Instead, cellist Sara Sant'Ambrogio revels in transcriptions of beloved etudes, waltzes, nocturnes and the Polonaise brillante, Op 3, before taking up the disc's only work written for her instrument, the Sonata, Op 65. Like many musicians who turn to arrangements to appropriate sublime pieces not originally in their repertoires, Sant'Ambrogio seizes the moment whenever she sets bow to strings. Her desire to play these works is understandable, given the fact that Chopin's music suits the temperament of the cello, with its dark-hued tone and penchant for the melancholy and the euphoric. …
