It's important to have goals for advancing your career. David Novak, Yum! brands chairman and CEO, points out a few life lessons that will help you succeed in your career in Taking People With You: The Only Way to Make Big Things Happen. Based on a leadership training course Novak has developed and now teaches to executives at Yum!, the book is a practical workbook that provides real-world applications that can be used to improve the way you manage yourself, your team, and even your company.

Novak structures the book in three parts, beginning with developing the proper mind-set. Once it's established, you can transition to part two: planning, alignment, and action. And in part three, he considers follow-through and self-reflection to measure how well you apply the ideas and how you could improve. There are many interesting tactics you can use to apply the principles. One notable tactic is to imagine that you're being replaced in your position by the new company hotshot. Consider how that person would critique what you do and how he or she would improve on it. Once you figure that out, make the improvements yourself.

Within the overarching parts, there are chapters that provide lessons that can enhance your career and your contributions to your company. Chapter 1 sets the focus on your "big goal." The following chapters provide the tools you'll need to achieve your big goal, including becoming your best self, telling it like it is and how it could be, and understanding and overcoming the barriers to success.

Throughout the book, Novak describes how Yum!'s renowned recognition culture is tied into achieving the goals of its own employees. Novak explains that this is a necessity for improving the employee experience and, ultimately, the customer experience.
