Revival for the Wagner opera withdrawn at its premiere

Would it matter if the 23-year-old Wagner--nothing if not impulsive--had destroyed all copies of his 'comic opera in two acts' after its disastrous premiere in March 1836? Probably not; while it can be entertaining for Wagner obsessives to play games like spotting anticipations of famous lines in this rough-and-ready version of Shakespeare's Measure far Measure, the relentless exuberance and harmonic plainness of much of the music, endlessly reiterating cadences that have long since served their purpose, will--should--try the patience today. And, for every pre-echo of Rienzi, Tannhauser and even Lohengrin, there's abundant evidence of dues being paid to Wagner's favoured non-German models of the 1830s, Auber and Rossini prominent among them. …
