The Marian Consort may be the most recent of the various vocal groups to emerge from the college choirs of Oxford and Cambridge. Singing everything with solo voices and directed from within the ensemble by the countertenor Rory McCleery, they show the precision and pellucid textures we have come to expect of such groups. There are two differences: that they resist the speeding and slowing that most employ, just as they resist dynamic articulation; and that they use far more vibrato than most, particularly on the top fines. With two women in the group, they make no pretence at emulating what might have happened in the 16th century; but that lets them sing out with more freedom. …
