Anticipated Uptick in Economy Presents Talent Challenge: Recommendations Offer Insight to Maintaining High Performance

Organizations are struggling when it comes to developing leaders, and they're getting worse at it, according to recent findings by the Institute for Corporate Productivity and AMA Enterprise. A mere 27 percent of organizations are effective at developing leaders. Far fewer--15 percent--are prepared with successor candidates for mission-critical roles reaching beyond the executive level.

These figures reflect the challenges to ensuring the internal talent to carry organizations forward, according to The Top 10 Critical Human Capital Issues: Enabling Sustained Growth Through Talent Transparency, an annual review of workforce issues that employers consider most critical yet which aren't being managed effectively.

The 2014 study of nearly 1,400 executives globally suggests concrete actions that organizations can take to sustain high performance in the next decade, with talent transparency serving as a common thread. The report recommends that companies assemble more expansive, highly targeted talent pools. The growing number of Millennials entering the workforce, as well as flatter organizational structures, require greater skills in coaching and technology, a second recommendation.

Finally, the report encourages organizations to "fully understand what supports the organization's strategy and culture and reward it." Only 34 percent of top-tier companies do well at measuring and rewarding results, with one in four effectual at measuring and rewarding behaviors.

The report states that "Leadership behavior plays a critical role in building trust in the message." One trend is the increased relevancy of the influencer. …
