Training for an Industry in Flux: Radiologists Receive Training to Help Them Overcome the Unprecedented Challenges They Are Facing in Their Industry

OPPORTUNITY

Changes in the healthcare industry, including new payment models and the outsourcing of certain technical processes, mean that physicians no longer can ignore the importance of soft skills. Once consumed with honing their clinical expertise, radiologists in particular must now acquire business acumen and management savvy to become effective decision makers and leaders in their field.

DIAGNOSIS

The Radiology Leadership Institute (RLI), the leadership training arm of the American College of Radiology, developed a leadership and management seminar to help radiologists improve as practice managers and successfully adapt to the changes in their profession. This blended learning program is based on Harvard Business Publishing's Leadership Direct program.

METHODS

To design a program tailored to radiologists' learning and development needs, the RLI spent two years surveying hundreds of radiologists, as well as reviewing leading MBA programs and other academic and corporate leadership development programs. It identified 151 leadership competencies and, after a comprehensive needs assessment, determined six competencies that are most critical to leadership success in the radiology field.
