Time for Celebration! There Are Times in Our Life When We Are Utterly Unaware of the Effect We Have on Someone Else and I Want to Thank Each and Every Exceptional Parent for Helping Me Keep My Promise to Eric!

Article excerpt

It's our column's one year anniversary! Isn't it funny how time can feel like it's flying by in an instant and, at other times, it moves at a glacial pace! I can't help but think of all the anniversaries we don't celebrate, but are never forgotten. Like the dates of surgeries and heart breaking conversations with physicians. We exceptional parents have many anniversaries that mark an event we simply cannot forget. Those dates have a place in our memories that, in some way, are just as special as all the birthdays, anniversaries and holidays we celebrate each year. I remember to honor those anniversaries too, even the ones I wish I could forget. And since it's our anniversary, this month I want to take a moment to express gratitude to all our exceptional fans! You let Eric and me come into your world each month, sharing with you our unique journey and we thank you from the bottom of our hearts to the heavens above, for making a difference in our lives.

MY PROMISE TO ERIC

You know my Eric was the light of my life. Eric and I had a love that was truly one of a kind. I made a promise to Eric that I would dedicate my efforts to supporting individuals and families of those with disabilities. That I would build a legacy in his name that would ensure that his footprint would leave its unique imprint on this world. As Eric's Mom, I try each and every day to make good on that pledge and it is my hope that it makes Eric very proud. On May 29th of this year, Eric would have celebrated his sixteenth birthday. I can imagine how much taller he would have been, and how his face would have looked as a young man, and I can't help but think with much amusement of some of the mischief he would have gotten into! It makes me smile and the hole in my heart gets a little smaller as I continue to work toward fulfilling the promise I made to my sweet Eric! Sometimes when I need a reminder, I pull my very own version of the "Just for Today" poem, which I share with all of you now.

Just for Today

Just for Today, I will remember my Eric's
life and bask in the comfort of all those treasured
   days and moments we shared.

Just for today, I will smile no matter how
much I hurt inside, for maybe if I smile a little,
my heart will continue to heal. …
