Britain's Got Talent may (thankfully for some) be over for another year, but the efforts of Simon Cowell et al might well have left you wondering how you can spot the next generation of talent and, more importantly, attract and retain it.

Want talented staff? Grow your own. Looking outside the business can send a message that existing employees aren't good enough to be considered. And research has shown that leaders promoted from within are more likely to succeed than external hirings.

Keep on moving. To identify high-fliers, give your talent pool as much experience as possible by moving them around the business. At the very least, it will demonstrate their capabilities as well as their shortcomings, and give you time to address them.

Rule of engagement. Experience and engagement drive the next generation of workers, characterised by their prolific use of social media, mobile and other technologies. Their expectations are high in regards to the workplace experience: they demand more from employers.
