Under-Secretary-General in Mideast to assess future arrangements

Brian E. Urquhart, Under-Secretary-General for Special Political Affairs, on his return from a three-nation tour of the Middle East, told reporters his aim had been to assess developments in south Lebanon in connection with future arrangements for the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).

At a press conference on 18 June at Headquarters, Mr. Urquhart said he had gone to the area to "touch base" with all concerned on behalf of the Secretary-General, and explain the Secretary-General's views on the most useful employment of UNIFIL in the future, and the importance of implementing Security Council resolution 425 so that the restoration of international peace and security in south Lebanon could be attained, with a view eventually to restoring the authority and sovereignty of the Lebanese Government.

The role of UNIFIL as a catalyst in the transitional phase towards that objective was also reviewed, he said.

Mr. Urquhart, from 11 to 15 June, visited Israel, Lebanon and the Syrian Arab Republic.

While in Israel, he met with Prime Minister Shimon Peres, Foreign Minister Yitzhak Shamir, Defense Minister Yitzhak Rabin, and Chief of Staff General Moshe Levy. …
