It is my experience that we tend to conflate American and Catholic values. It takes some critical thinking to decipher which values are more important, Catholic or American. The article "Theologians critique Dolan's defense of capitalism" (NCR, July 4-17) presents us with an issue of conflict of values.

Cardinal Timothy Dolan offers his opinion in a piece in The Wall Street Journal. His opinion is severely critiqued by a half dozen competent theologians. I think his opinion is a mixture of Adam Smith and Ayn Rand. Smith's economic theories presume that people are virtuous in their pursuit of a good economy. That, in my opinion, is a questionable assumption. Rand's theory rejects religion and faith and proposes "rational and ethical egoism."Dolan got this one wrong and might rethink his views on American capitalism. to police themselves--or, better yet, did not police themselves. Talk about putting the fox in charge of the hen house. …
