For fragrant blossoms next spring, sow sweet pea seeds now. (We like 'Spencer Ruffled' and 'Royal'.) Set seeds 1 inch deep and 1 to 2 inches apart in well-amended soil; when seedlings are 4 to 5 inches tall, thin them to 6 inches apart.

Plant cool-season vegetables, including broccoli, cabbage, kale, and Swiss chard.

Shop nurseries early in the month for the best selection of bulbs such as daffodils, hyacinths, and tulips. Choose firm ones without soft spots.


Spread granular citrus fertilizer around citrus trees, following package instructions. Cover with mulch; water well.

Dig and divide overgrown perennials such as daylilies and irises. Use a spade to carefully split each clump into smaller sections for replanting.


Continue picking eggplant, peppers, string beans, tomatoes, and zucchini.

For bright summer bouquets, snip sunflowers and zinnias, then mix them in vases with purple basil and rosemary.

Pick winter squash when the stem begins to shrivel and the rind resists denting if pressed with a fingernail. Wipe the

squash of any soil, then place it in a sunny spot for at least three days, turning it each day, to intensify its flavor and finish coloring its skin. …
