What inspired your tiny project? I realized I'd spent $50,000 on rent in five years and should be putting that money to better use. Also, my girlfriend, Anjali, was applying to grad schools, so we needed flexibility and mobility. When I saw the house-on-trailer concept, I fell in love with it.

You're not a contractor--how did you figure out how to build a home? Yep, I have no formal construction experience. I spent months sourcing materials, seeking advice, and planning.

How did you find a place to park it? We put an ad on Craigslist and the county bulletin board. I said we needed a spot with a 120-volt power outlet and pressurized water spigot, and we were willing to pay rent or trade for yard work. Several people contacted us, and it's working out great.

Any advice for space planning? Understand what spaces you really need. In bigger homes, a lot of the rooms aren't really used. This house is designed very purposefully to meet our exact needs.

What's your small-space philosophy? A McMansion and the American dream of a couple of kids and a dog ... maybe that's not what you want. It's really cool to be an example of something different for a younger generation--we're redefining what it means to be a homeowner. …
