Oistrakh plays the Franck Sonata with loving care, stressing its romantic and poetical aspects. There are many features of his playing which I prefer to Francescatti's, though the latter gives a noble, even majestic interpretation which is not without its merits. It is in sheer subtlety of bowing and fingering that Oistrakh scores; he has more technical resources with which to enhance his expressive powers, and he seems to be intent on getting the work 'across the footlights', as its dedicatee, Eugene Ysaye, would have remarked.
