Katrine Gislinge's rendition of Kreisleriana is full of fantasy, poetry, and ebb and flow. So, of course, are dozens of other recordings, and while her range of colour, attack and nuance, and her general articulation and transparency are all of a high order, they are hardly world-beating, while the acoustic itself could be warmer.

The rationale for the disc comes down to whether Schumann and Norgard add up to more than the sum of their parts, and the booklet is entirely given over to a conversation on that topic. The idea was the pianist's, and Norgard readily grants the affinity, at least at the level of melody and texture assembled from fragments but never allowed to blossom fully, and of layers now latent, now brought to the surface as if by magic.

The idea of almost simultaneous concealment and revelation does ring true for both composers. …
