Born in Cornwall in 1961, Paul Carr pursued a successful career in operatic stage management before devoting himself fulltime to composition in 2004. He has written extensively for film and television, and amassed an impressive body of work, including (among other things) concertos for viola, piano, flute, bassoon, trumpet and trombone, a Sinfonietta for orchestra, Piano Quartet, Requiem for an Angel (also recorded by Stone Records, 2/11) and the present setting of the Seven Last Words from the Cross.

Commissioned by the Bath Minerva Choir and premiered in Bath Abbey on April 20, 2013, the last-named is scored for solo baritone (in the role of Jesus, most eloquently fulfilled here by William Dazeley), mixed choir and an orchestra of strings, harp, organ and percussion, and interpolates texts from such diverse sources as the Good Friday Antiphon, Stabat mater, Phineas Fletcher's poem 'A Litany' ('Drop, drop slow tears') and Padre Pio (his prayer 'Stay with me, Lord, for you are my light'). …
