Every year, when we look at risk management education, I find myself thinking back to my school career. Like many people, I have a boatload of fond college memories. Sure, some of them are colored with the kind of nostalgia that somehow glamorizes even the times I stayed up all night in a panic to write a last-minute, Mountain Dew-and-black-coffee-fueled term paper, but overall, it really was a good time. Even the lunatic roommates, the ramen noodles for every meal, the awful frat-party hangovers and the single-digit grades received on exams taken while suffering from those hangovers hold a special place in my heart--right next to getting on the Dean's list, finally receiving my diploma and realizing that I had achieved something that even my cynical self could consider truly special. College is where I learned to work hard and play hard and, although it took a few more years before I figured out how to balance the two, the experience was invaluable.

Nevertheless, one of the best things about graduating is that you no longer have to go back unless you really want to. …
