Penny Matthews is an Australian author and editor from Adelaide. She has written novels for young adults, junior readers and emergent readers, as well as picture books. Ruby's stories are part of the very popular 'Our Australian Girl' series, which tell about life throughout history. Ruby of Kettle Farm is the fourth in the Ruby series.

Ruby lived during the Great Depression and faced similar lifestyle upheavals to many families of the era. This book is set in 1931 when Ruby and her mother are forced to live with her relatives on Kettle Farm after her father is sent to prison for embezzlement.

This book is very readable. The characters are believable which helps to make the story appealing to middle / upper primary girls. They would be able to relate to the friendship issues that Ruby faces at school and would empathise with Ruby's determination to protect her dog from her uncle. …
