The novel tells the story of Alex, a fourteen-year-old hermaphrodite, who has been brought up a boy but feels she should be a girl. This causes all sorts of problems, especially as it's very clear that Alex's parents, particularly her mother, oppose the idea and simply don't know how to deal with her anymore.

This is an interesting teen drama with an unusual subject matter, the relevance of which seems to be drawing a lot of attention and which has been expressed in various media: apart from several newspaper and magazine articles published in the last year or so, you may be familiar with the fantastic award-winning French film Tomboy (2011, so still fairly recent), or you may have heard of author Lisa Williamson's upcoming debut novel The Art of Being Normal (to be published in the UK in January 2015 by David Fickling Books), all of which also deal with the difficulties surrounding the issue of gender identity. …
