William Bauer's Music Learning Today presents ways to utilize technology as an effective tool for music learning. Bauer is associate professor and director of the Online Master of Music in Music Education program at the University of Florida. The book is aimed at in-service or pre-service music teachers who would like to create lesson plans or a curriculum with technology that will assist in developing musicianship in students.

Bauer devotes an introductory chapter to providing a conceptual framework for technology-assisted music learning. What I found most interesting in this chapter was his explanation of the research on Technological Pedagogical and Content Knowledge (TPACK) for music education. Instead of confusing readers with plenty of technical jargon, Bauer successfully explains the relationship between the three types of knowledge and how educators can effectively utilize them to become adaptive experts in TPACK.

The second chapter covers technology fundamentals for teachers who may be novices in integrating technology into their classrooms or studios. He discusses concrete examples of technology in computer systems, instructional software, Internet resources and other media that benefits music teachers.

The next three chapters focus on three different content areas applicable in music education: creating music, performing music and responding to music. …
