SAGE Local Stats: Data on a Smaller Scale

Following the release of SAGE Publications' State Stats data resource, feedback from the public was positive, says Todd Baldwin, executive director of online library and reference publishing, but users requested statistics on a more local level. Teachers were looking for statistics that would help students understand specific concepts that could be illustrated by using numbers from their own community.

"Local Stats is a rich database providing hard-to-find, vetted, and cleaned data measures about U.S. counties, cities, and metropolitan statistical areas across a broad range of topics in the social sciences," says Baldwin. "You can easily view, analyze, compare, and export data in maps, tables, line graphs, and scatterplots." The data comes from federal statistics, nonprofits, and private organizations, with more than 3,000 sets covering the time between 1980 and present day.

What sets Local Stats apart from similar offerings from SAGE's competitors, according to Baldwin, is the "rigorous data cleaning process" that all datasets SAGE releases must go through. …
