Talent Development and a Global Perspective

For the past six months, I've been using this column to update you on the progress we are making as we transition our brand from ASTD to the Association for Talent Development. As 2014 winds down, I'd like to take this opportunity to talk about some larger efforts that are under way, efforts that will be realized in 2015 and ones we believe are important to our worldwide community.

The first is research on two important books that will be released in 2015, Global Talent Development: Issues, Challenges, and Best Practices, and The ATD Talent Management Handbook. Bill Rothwell, one of the pre-eminent researchers in our field, is leading the data collection efforts for both books and we are excited about what he is learning.

Global Talent Development will take a deep dive into how talent development is practiced around the world, and will explore topics such as the role of formal and informal learning, cross-cultural issues, and trends. The ATD Talent Management Handbook will examine talent development in relation to talent management. It will feature chapters from many thought leaders, examine the various functions of talent management, and provide leading thinking on both best practices and progressive ideas for the entire employee life cycle, from talent attraction to succession planning. …
