Although unequivocal support of quality programs by senior management is a vital component of a successful culture of quality, only 60 percent of respondents to a study by ASQ and Forbes Insights claim their leaders offer this level of support.

Even fewer respondents-50 percent-say support for quality is evident among middle management, and only 47 percent say their organization's senior management leads by example, according to the research.

The report, Culture of Quality: Accelerating Growth and Performance in the Enterprise, explores support of quality by organizations and the key elements of a successful culture of quality. This study offers actionable insight-from organizations such as Samsung, FedEx, and HP-into how a quality-driven culture can accelerate business performance.

The research draws on the responses of 1,010 senior leaders and 1,281 quality professionals worldwide from a multitude of industries. The survey was conducted online in April 2014.

According to the research, incentives are an essential component of a quality culture, but incentives vary widely.

A good example of an effective incentive program highlighted in the research is Intuit's Spotlight program, which enables employees to award a co-worker for outstanding performance. The awards can be redeemed for gift certificates, ranging from $10 to $1,000, for popular retailers.
