For the best selection of hybrid tea and floribunda roses, order bare-root plants this month from Garden Valley Ranch. Owner Mark Grim's favorites include deep plum-colored 'Ebb Tide' and sweetly scented 'White Licorice'. Roses will begin shipping in mid-January.

Order bare-root "fruit salad" trees now for harvesting stone fruits from June to August. A single multigrafted tree will produce apricots, nectarines, peaches, and plums. Available from Bay Laurel Nursery; shipping starts in early January.


In mild-winter areas, continue to sow seeds of arugula, lettuce, radish, and spinach in containers or raised beds.

Plant chilled tulip bulbs. Space them 4 to 8 inches apart in garden beds, in holes dug three times as deep as the bulbs are wide. Bulbs that haven't been chilled may develop shorter stems, smaller flowers, or not bloom at all.

Fill gaps in the garden with cool-season annuals such as pansies, primroses, and violas.


To prolong your lettuce season, pick only the outer leaves each time you harvest and keep the center rosette intact. …
