There have already been two other DVDs of L'elisir d'amore with Rolando Villazon in the cast but this is the first where he is also the director. Not abashed by the assignment (only his second as an opera director), Villazon turns in an action-packed, razzle-dazzle production. The opera is set in a film studio during the silent movie era, where the cast is filming a Western. The wide Festspielhaus stage at Baden-Baden is filled with action and the large company turns in a rollicking show.

Does it work as a new look for L'elisir d'amore? The crucial twist is that Nemorino, who plays merely a bit part in the Western, is in love with the star, Adina, in real life. The action constantly switches between the film and the offstage action (a studio assistant helpfully calls 'Cut! …
