One of the unfortunate aspects of compiling our annual Year in Risk review is that, due to the lead time that we need to prepare the issue for publication, we are unable to cover some of the later-breaking stories that happen in November and December. As one online reader correctly pointed out last year, it is the chance you take when you elect to publish a review of the year's risks before the year is actually over. The problem is that, if we wanted to make sure we covered Z014 to the bitter end, we would have to run the article in March, and who really wants to review the previous year three months into the new one? So December it is. To be unnecessarily pedantic about it, I suppose we could title it "Approximately 10 Months in Risk," but that obviously doesn't have quite the same ring to it.

Therefore, we have to consign ourselves to missing certain events. Last year, Typhoon Haiyan, one of the strongest storms ever recorded, devastated the Philippines in November, while December saw the revelation of the massive Target data breach. …
