Yet another novel set in the future--2137--but happily the characters are without psychic or supernatural powers. The heroine, Flora, is dramatically introduced on the front cover of the book as 'Sixteen/ Alone/ A Survivor' and the writer skilfully arouses sympathy for her by presenting her history in the early chapters. Until six months before the story opens she had lived with her grandparents but, since both have died she is now alone. Flora tells her story in the first person: she misses her grandparents dreadfully, not least for the practical help they provided to ensure survival in this primitive environment. She does have a friend, a boy, Kit, who is of similar age, whom she has known all her life and who lives nearby. Although very independent, she values Kit's friendship, advice and help. …
