I joined the 325th Glider Infantry at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, in time to go overseas. The 82nd Airborne Division got credit for 422 days under enemy fire and I didn't miss a day that my unit was on the front line. I served in French Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia. I made the invasion of Sicily, invasion of Italy, served in Ireland, England, crash-landed in a British Horsa Glider in Normandy, crash-landed acting as co-pilot in Holland, served in France, and fought in the Battle of the Bulge from December 17, 1944, to February 18, 1945.1 was wounded several times. The field medics were able to take care of me and I kept going.

I helped set up the first city government when we reached Naples. We remained in Naples until moving to Ireland, then to England. We left at 4:35 A.M. from the airport at Ramsbury, England, on June 7th for the invasion of Normandy. We landed near Sainte-Marie-du-Mont at 6:50 A.M. and fought for 33 days and nights without relief. We lost a great number in Normandy.

We returned to England to train replacements for the Holland invasion [Operation Market Garden], and they increased the number in our company from 155 to 195. On September 23, our group flew into Holland in 15 CG-4A Waco Gliders. We landed north of the Maas River. We were to take and hold Nijmegen Bridge. We landed in a plowed field, standing the glider on its nose, throwing me against the crash bar, and injuring my right side.
