After moving to California in 1943 and living there for nearly a year, my folks decided to return to the Midwest in the spring of 1944. My father could not get enough ration stamps to drive our auto back because he was not returning to war work. So, he had the car shipped back in a train boxcar and our two dogs returned in the baggage car.

I was at the age (my 13th birthday having been December 23, 1943) where I wanted to be a marine and fight the enemy. I had seen the newsreels at the movie theatre and I thought the marines did most of the real fighting.

On the train trip back I wore my army helmet liner that I had got somewhere, and carried my wooden machine gun that a friend of mine and I had made.

We changed trains in Denver. It was here that I decided I wanted to buy a copy of Yank, the army magazine put out for the armed forces only. …
