I was born in July 1941 in northeast Wyoming--Moorcroft to be exact, about 120 miles west of Rapid City, South Dakota. I have some unique memories of the time just the same. I remember watching and hearing large groups (squadrons?) of those piston-driven airplanes flying over. I still get goose pimples as I go back in my mind and hear them. I remember what an awesome feeling it was to hear and see them. Oh, I do so wish that I could hear a large formation of them fly over again. It is a sound like nothing else, and the sight of them was wonderful.

My mother's parents lived in Stockton, California, and my grandmother, whom I had never seen, had some sort of surgery. It must have been pretty scary, for my mother loaded me on a train when I was two and a half years old and we traveled to California. …
