The third novel in the 'Schwartzgarten' series has portly Prince Eugene as its anti-hero. The Prince loves puddings and poetry, but is forced to abandon them when the evil tyrant of neighbouring Schwartzgarten declares war. His new bride, Princess Euphenia hopes he will be killed in battle so that she can plan his elaborate funeral, a sentiment to be expected from someone who dots every i with a hand-drawn skull. His mother comes to see him off in order to make sure that he has not run away. His only friends are Kalvitas, the Pastry Chef's talented assistant and Elka, the Pastry Chef's daughter who help him to face the horrors of the battlefield. The Prince has to endure the terrible food, the lack of comfort and of course the ever-present threat of death. …
