Government Must Act to Help Farmers Produce More: NFU President Meurig Raymond Explains Why Farming Should Be at the Top of the Political Agenda

The importance of food and farming was discussed by all the main political parties on a national stage this week. Top of the agenda was a new report from the NFU which looked at the forecast for self-sufficiency in food. In it, it said we could see food production fall to just 53 per cent of the food needed in 25 years' time. We will have to rely on imports for nearly half the food needed to feed the nation--this is a dismal prospect for the industry, one that needs to change.

It's not just the farmers at the forefront of food production that this challenge concerns; surveys show 85 per cent of the British public on the receiving end of our food want to see supermarkets selling more British food. The vast majority of people clearly see value in food produced by British farmers.
