Conference headquarters

The new Marriott Marquis Hotel will serve as ALA headquarters hotel for the New York conference. It will house the ALA Offices, Council and Membership meetings, as well as other major meetings/events to be held during the conference week.

Conference exhibits and service centers, including registration, local information and tours, meal ticket desk, message conter, postal substation, package-wrapping desk, and first-aid room, will be located in the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center. Placement service will be available in the Exhibition Hall, Sheraton Centre Hotel.

Other properties accommodating ALA's sleeping and meeting room requirements are the New York Hilton, New York Penta, Omni Park Central, and Sheraton Centre hotels.

Hotel reservations

Reservation request for the preconference period and the conference week will be accepted from Jan. 2 to June 6. Requests are to be sent to: ALA Housing Bureau Two Columbus Circle 6th Floor New York, NY 10019

After June 6 the ALA Housing Bureau will continue to make placements, but only on a space available basis and not necessarily at the published rates.

A list of selected hotels and their rates appears on page 73. Rates are quoted for the room, not per person, and all rooms will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. all reservations must be made by mail using the orm on page 74. Telephone calls will not be accepted for reservations.

All requests must indicate five choices. Be sure to give accurate dates and approximate arrival/departure hours for all persons who will occupy the rooms requested. Note that the ALA Housing Bureau does not assume the responsibility of pairing guests for double occupancy or in multiple housing units.

Hotel confirmations

All housing requests must be made through the ALA Housing Bureau of the address indicated above. Receipt of room reservations will be acknowledged by the Bureau; confirmation of rooms will be sent from the assigned hotel as soon as possible after receipt of requests.

Rooms will not be held after 6 p.m. without a guarantee, and/or hotels may require a first night's deposit regardless of arrival time. For credit card guarantee, fill in the information requested on the hotel reservation form on page 74. For first night's deposit, wait until you have received room confirmation from the assigned hotel. The confirmation from will include deposit information.

Hotel cancellations/changes

Requests for cancellations and changes of accommodations are to be made in writing to the ALA Housing Bureau up to 20 days before the opening of the conference. After 20 days prior to the opening of the conference, changes and cancellations are to be made directly with the assigned hotel.


All exhibits (booth, table, and professional) will be located in the Level Exhibition Hall of the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center. After their official opening on Saturday, June 28 (ribbon-cutting cermony at 9 a.m.), the exhibits will be open 9 a.m.-4 p.m., Saturday, June 28; 9 a.m.-5 p.m. on Sunday, June 29, and Monday, June 30; 9 a.m.-3 p.m. on Tuesday, July 1 (exhibits closing day).

Full information and applications for exhibit space were mailed in early January 1986. Exhibitors interested in taking pat in the New York show who have not received the material by mid-January should write to Walter Brueggen, Conference Manager, ALA Conference Arrangements Office, 50 E. Huron Street, Chicago, IL 60611.

All exhibit visitors will be required to have a registration badge. Arrangements can be made for groups (library school students, teachers, etc.) to receive free exhibit badges in advance by writing to "Visit the Exhibits," ALA Conference Arrangements Office, 50 E. Huron St., Chicago, IL 60611, not later than June 6. Include a stamped, self-addressed envelope and be sure to affix an extra 22^ stamp should the request be for 10 or more free badges. …
