Influential figures as varied as Kirk Douglas and Phi Kappa Phi member Hillary Rodham Clinton boast bylines in the magazine. With a caveat.

The former (fall 1970) appeared as a reprint and the latter (winter 1997) as an adaptation of a piece for another audience. The magazine regularly used those templates--reprints and adaptations--from the outset through much of the 20th century. It's unclear with other leading lights who brightened the publication, such as Jacques Barzun (spring 1960), if their work had run earlier elsewhere or was commissioned by the journal.

But many authorities across the disciplines have contributed firsthand material. Some of these movers and shakers have been Society members, others have not. Some earned a paycheck for their labors; others volunteered their services.
