A blog post about the Archdiocese of San Francisco's cathedral reportedly using sprinklers to discourage people experiencing homelessness from sleeping on its steps led to a wave of criticism from readers.

This is so distressing. The homeless are a special challenge in San Francisco. Many are mentally ill and not receiving care. I know there are no easy answers. But with all due respect to the cathedral staff, this is so, so wrong. It makes all of us Catholics look very, very bad.--DavidLakeview

If one claims to be a follower of Jesus, one does not pour water over a homeless person sleeping on the steps of a church in winter, in summer, any time. One opens the door, invites them in, then they can be afforded the benefits of what charitable agencies the church has to offer. If one pours water on a sleeping homeless person, one cannot claim to be a follower of Jesus.
