Trail repair, coastal hiking: Santa Cruz to San Mateo

Trail Days. Each winter, the Peninsula's hiking trails get battered--rains wash out sections and high winds blow deadfall across the paths. And each spring, volunteers help repair the trails on public work days. This year's Trail Days are on two Saturdays--April 19 and May 3. They offer the chance for satisfying work, exercise, and crew companionship.

Volunteers should wear sturdy boots, long-sleeved shirts and long pants (because of possible poison oak), gloves, and a hat for shade. Bring a lunch, water, and, if possible, trail tools such as a mattock, shovel, pick, heavy rake.

Parks scheduled for improvement April 19 include Big Basin, Butano, Castle Rock, Fremont Older Open Space, Nisene Marks, and Sanborn. May 3, crews work in Huddart, Junipero Serra, Pescadero Creek, and Wunderlich county parks, as well as Purisima Creek Open Space. Volunteers who want to work in Big Basin or Castle Rock should call (415) 968-2412 or (408) 252-1769. For other parks, work times, and site directions, call (415) 968-7065. Your $1 registration fee includes a Trail Days patch.
