His recent death means that this is the very last book by the Carnegie winning author and despite the fact that it is technically also his first book for adults, it is one which any serious fan of fantasy of any age could enjoy and should reduce librarians to tears of laughter. In short it is a must have purchase for school libraries. As a perfect example of metafiction it could also have uses for A-level English study! As Tim Bowler puts it in his review 'With a nod towards Faust and a wink towards Tristram Shandy, Peet takes us through a riotous send up of fantasy both as fiction and as industry. Nothing and nobody escapes Peet's wit, including Peet himself. He states that the novel is not autobiographical, and I'm sure that's technically true, but he's clearly making game of himself along with the rest of the writing community. …
