Two young boys in Orange County, Florida, proved that the self-preservation instinct may not be as powerful as the instinct to help others.

Isiah Francis, 10, and his friend Jeremiah Grimes, 11, detected the smell of smoke while playing video games at an efficiency motel in Oakland, Florida, on June 16. They looked out the window and discovered a burning mobile home in the parking lot and immediately sprang into action. Jeremiah called 911, and the boys ran toward the blaze.

Inside, they saw a man frantically searching for water to put out the flames, reported the Associated Press. The man told the two boys that there were two children in the kitchen.

"I was in the place first trying to get those little kids out to save their lives," Isiah said. "I was nervous because there was so much smoke. It was hard for me to see and all that." He recalled, "I could kind of see, but I had to use my sense of touch. …
