Great Salt Lake's island-park . . . by raft-ferry

Three years ago, excessive winter snows and runoff caused the waters of Utah's Great Salt Lake to rise, covering the causeway that linked Antelope Island State Park to the mainland. Last year ferry service to the island began, aboard a 37-foot neoprene raft with seating for 36 passengers and their gear.

This year it's continuing, at least through September. Beginning at 10 A.M. weekends, 11 weekdays, the ferry leaves every 2 hours from Syracuse Landing, 35 miles northwest of downtown Salt Lake City. (Take I-15 past Layton, turn west at exit 335, and follow State 108 about 7 miles to the landing.) The last ferry returns around 7. Round-trip cost is $12.50, $7.50 for ages 3 through 12.

After an hour's ride, your pontoon ferry docks near showers, rest rooms, picnic areas, and a snack bar. Aquabikes and bicycles, horseshoes and volleyballs are available for your use, free. Nearby are 25 sites for tent camping; cost is $5. …
